For my research at the University of Zürich I created a travel survey. I would be very happy if you could find some time and answer my questions. Click here
Cheers Thomas

Hier Klicken

Talking with Pros

December 1st, 2004

Some lines, some thoughts from a thorntree user anwsering my questions about long term travel. Maybe of any interest to you ;-)

-BpGuru-
“If you have unlimited time, I suggest you use a different mindset when looking at what you should do. Don’t think of it as travel. Think of it as living in various places for various amounts of time. Go to the first place you want to visit and stay as long as you want. When you are ready to move on, pick the next place you want to go.

You aren’t going on a trip. You are leaving where you live now with no pre-determined return date. That means you no longer live there. Nor are you planning to move to another country. ie. You are going to live in France. So where exactly will you be living? The answer is that you will be living wherever you are on any given day.

I cannot emphasis enough that it makes a huge difference to how you see things when you don’t think of yourself as travelling. Financial independence frees you from needing to plan anything. I went to a Greek Island thinking I would stay a week or so and ended up staying 7 years. There was never a day when I said ” I am going to stay here.” I just never decided to leave.

I suppose you could say that plans and itineraries are for those who cannot afford to not have them. Enjoy your freedom. ”
